Questo doppio cd - uscito nel 1999 - ripropone fedelmente il memorabile concerto che Duke Ellington tenne al festival di Newport nel 1956, ovvero nel periodo in cui sostenere una formazione ampia come quella della sua big band stava iniziando a rivelarsi difficile. Quella sua partecipazione gli donò una nuova popolarità e lo stesso Ellington era solito dire di essere rinato a Newport '56. Da quell'anno in poi è diventato un ospite fisso del festival (così come per molti altri festival simili che cominciavano a nascere in quegli anni). Tra le performance migliori da segnalare il leggendario  assolo di Paul Gonsalves in Diminuendo e Crescendo in Blue.
